MATCH FLOW

Shafique and Masood increase Pakistan's lead after Sri Lanka folds cheaply.

On day one, Abrar grabbed four wickets and Naseem took three to bowl Sri Lanka out for 166.

Pakistan's 145 for 2 (Shafique 74*, Masood 51, Fernando 2-41) are 21 runs behind Sri Lanka's 166 (Dhananjaya 57, Chandimal 34, Abrar 4-69, Naseem 3-41).

Pakistan dominated in every aspect of the second Test, trailing Sri Lanka by just 21 runs at the close of day one. As Pakistan stormed to 145 for 2 from 28.3 overs, Abdullah Shafique was unbeaten on 74, while Babar Azam was undefeated on 8.

The hosts were the authors of their own demise, succumbing for 166 before tea after batting first on what appeared to be a fairly excellent surface. It was hardly the performance Dimuth Karunaratne had hoped for after a rain-delayed start.

Due to poor shot selection and excellent defense, just four Sri Lankan bats reached double figures before the innings ended. Only Dhananjaya de Silva scored more than fifty points, with 57. Abrar Ahmed finished with 4 for 69 and Naseem Shah with 3 for 41 as Pakistan ran roughshod over the Sri Lankan batters. But, once again, it was Pakistan's fielding that stood out.

Shan Masood, whose 47-ball 51 would cement Pakistan's domination later in the day, set the tone early in the game, running Nishan Madushka out in the third over of the day. He would use the same method to get Prabath Jayasuriya out near the end of the game.

In the meantime, Sadeera Samarawickrama was caught skillfully at short leg for the third time in as many innings, and Dhananjaya was also taken in the deep by a fine catch.

When Pakistan did not provide such brilliance on the field, Sri Lanka's batters did, such as when Angelo Mathews edged through probing outside off, or when Kusal Mendis sliced straight to point, or when Dinesh Chandimal top-edged gently to midwicket. You might put Ramesh Mendis in this as well, but by the time he fell, all chance of salvaging the innings had all but vanished.

At this time, it was evident that Sri Lanka had missed good opportunities, but Pakistan sped ahead to emphasize the point even more at seven in first inning.

Shafique and Masood proceeded to shred the bowling after Imam-ul-Haq was bowled out cheaply, seeking to fight off a short one. There was no safe region on the ground, although both preferred the straight boundaries, with three sixes being pummeled down the ground. Masood top-edged one for Kusal at midwicket to take a superb catch with the ball tumbling over his shoulder, and the pair put on 108 runs at a pace of 5.58.

While Pakistan's scoring rate dropped significantly after this dismissal, it was just as likely due to the sky dimming and the day winding down.

Sri Lanka did not help matters by neglecting to pursue a review of a lbw decision against Shafique, despite replays indicating that it would have been reversed. Shafique was then called out lbw on-field, but replays showed the ball bouncing over, and DRS spared him shortly before stumps.

Pakistan has been courageous in their approach, and if the visitors continue in the same manner, it might be a long day on the field for Sri Lanka.
